THE A.M.P.A.S. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science: It is an honorary org founded in 1927 at Hollywood, Calif, with d main purpose of raising d cultural & technical standards of professional film making. D Academy consists of 5000+ members drawn from d performing, technical & administrative branches of d Film Industry. Membership is strictly by invitation & d eligibility depends on d requirements of a given branch of d Academy. Although d membership is open to film workers of all countries, d Academy has generally been associated with d US film industry (H'wood).
D Notion of AMPAS began with Louis B.Mayer d head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) wanted an org that will mediate labor disputes & to raise d Industry's image. He & 3 H'wood big-wigs, actor Conrad Nagel, director Fred Niblo, & d pres of of d Association of Motion Pic Producers, Fred Beetson discussed d possibility of such an org & d idea of an Annual banquet were weighed, with open membership to all involved in d 5 branches of d Industry namely d actors, directors, technicians, writers & producers. In their brief meeting d idea of an award wasn't mentioned as yet . After this, Mayer invited 36 professionals involved in d Film Industry for a for a formal banquet held at d Ambassador Hotel, LosAngles on 11th of Jan, 1927, Mayer presented to d group what he called as d American Academy of Motion Pics Arts & Science, & was open to those professional's contributing to d Motion Pic Industry. All, present at d banquet were regarded as d founders of this org. Later Mayer's lawyers while drafting d charter changed d name to Academy of Motion Pics Arts & Science.
Douglas Fairbanks,Sr was elected as d 1st Pres of AMPAS, & he introduced was to bestow an "award of Merit for distinctive achievement", a year later d voting system was introduced & d nomination & d selection process began to award professional's with an award for their distinctive achievement in Motion Pics & thus began what we now know as d Academy Awards or d Oscar Awards of Merit..
