The Hollywood Ten & the House on Un-American Activities or HUAC & the Hollywood black-list.

# Though this darkest period is also called as the McCarthy Era or McCarthyism, the problem of the Communist party leaning by Hollywood Professionals, started much earlier, referred to as the 1st or the 2nd Red-scare. Joe McCarthy was a Senator from WI or Wisconsin-after the 2nd World War ended in 1945 a new World order dividing Countries into blocs i.e. the Country's allegiance to the Ideology of Communism & Democracy, would usher in the concept of a Cold-War & a state of uneasy calm would ensue. The blocs were headed by the two super-powers, USA as the protector of democracy & USSR leading the Communist Ideology. They were also known as the Eastern & the Western bloc & would shape the Foreign policy of the World.
The Cold-War had its worst effects on the most democratic of Institution, that of ,Hollywood & a blacklist would seal many a Film professionals career, which came to b popularly known as the Hollywood-10. A Communist Party of USA (CPUSA) played a major role in the labor movements that arose with the Great Depression. Since both the Countries fought on the same side during the Great War, an obvious result was the young idealists mainly from the arts & entertainment sector got attracted to this new concept of equality.

Meanwhile in Hollywood witnessed a number of strikes & labor unionism that created a rift between the powerful studio bosses & the unions of which the Screen-Writer's guild of Hollywood being the main front. As early as 1938 rumors of  H'wood having Communist supporters were abuzz. But it wasn't until 1947 that HUAC summoned 53 professionals to appear before it, to defend their alleged Communist leanings. Of this 10 of the summoned refused to answer question raised by the Committee since they felt that it stood against the basic Human dignity, Liberty, & Democracy as laid down in the US Constitution. The HUAC deemed this as Contempt & the 10 Hollywood Professionals that included screenwriter Dalton Trumbo & prolific Hollywood Director Edward Dmytryk.
